Via Appia and the Catacombs

A half-day walk on the outskirts of Rome.

Via Appia Antica—also known as the Appian Way—is one of Rome's oldest roads. This walk goes out of the city and into the Roman countryside, surrounded by history.

Itinerary

This tour is a good opportunity to escape from the city traffic!
The Appian Way, the first paved "high way" leading out of Rome, was built in 312 BC and is today an archaeological park.The tour with your guide will start at the Baths of Caracalla, the magnificent ruins of these Thermare, among the biggest ever built in ancient Rome.

We will then stop at the Catacombs of San Sebastiano (or San Callisto). Nearby is the Circus of Maxentius, built for chariot races, and the monumental Tomb of Cecilia Metella, considered the most famous landmarks of the Via Appia.
