Half a day exploring the history of Jewish Rome.
The Jewish community in Rome is the oldest Jewish community in Europe, dating back to 161 B.C. The Ghetto is the quarter where the Jewish people were segregated in 1555 by Pope Paul IV.
It is possible to visit the main Synagogue of Rome, built only after Italy's unification in 1870, when the Jews were given Italian citizenship.
Not far from the Synagogue is Trastevere, the area where the Jewish community lived from Roman times until the Renaissance. This is one of the most picturesque quarters in all of Rome, with its narrow streets and many artisans. Here we will visit a beautiful church of the Middle Ages, Santa Maria in Trastevere. This area is also known for its many excellent small restaurants and an active night life.
Duration: 3-3.5 hours
(If you are interested in Jewish Rome don't forget to book the excursion to Ostia Antica where are still the remains of the oldest Sinagogue ever built in Europe).
